Sustainability at KR Group – KR Bon Reduction
As a leader in construction in Northeast Scotland, we recognise the role we play in shaping the built environment and its impact on our planet. We deeply embed our commitment to sustainability in our operations, from procurement to site. As a business, we strive to minimise our environmental footprint and promote sustainable practices across all aspects of the business.
In early 2022, KR Group founded KR Bon Reduction, dedicated to repurposing used cladding panels, to divert them from landfill. When the outer membrane is removed from the panels, we re-use the thermoset plastic foam board as insulation. Repurposed PIR has saved a total of 108 tons Co2eq.
Environmental benefits include diverting cladding and construction waste from landfill and negating need for raw material to create new. Over 5 years 202,500m2 of panels will be diverted from landfill, saving of 7,736 tonnes of Co2eq.
Since 2022, KR Bon has grown to include additional repurposed materials, like used safety harnesses and wooden pallets. Recently, we made links with RGU to conduct R&D on recycle routes for failed safety harnesses. We are making progress sourcing suitable equipment, and the results are encouraging.
We sold 24 wooden pallets via our e-commerce site from 2022 – 2024. Additionally, we have donated over 200 pallets to organisations, including Wood Recyclability. Over two years, 1.12Tons Co2eq has been saved through repurposing pallets.
Other initiatives include installation of EV charging points at our office, an on-site wormery for food waste, and installation of a water harvesting system. Furthermore, we partnered with Styropack to reuse all polystyrene associated with deliveries, and we regularly work with the local community to support young people, training, and charitable organisations.
